Americans Living in Germany: Know Before You Go
Wertheim am Main is centrally located to most US military bases in Germany. The trip is about a two-hour drive from the Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) as well as Vilseck and Grafenwöhr.
Before you head out, a quick reminder of the things to always bring when traveling as an American. First, don’t forget to bring cash (Euros), passports, and vaccination documents (if necessary).

Wertheim am Main, Germany
Wertheim am Main, which translates to “Wertheim on the Main River,” is located in the southwestern part of Germany, right outside of Würzburg. The gem and key landmark is Wertheim Castle which sits on a hill guarding the town.
A walk through the historical city can be done at your leisure or join a walking tour for a more in-depth history. Here you will be greeted with a mixture of modern-day old-world charm, from the buildings that have been there since the 16th century to family-owned businesses.
On your walk through the picturesque town, there are a three suggested landmarks you’ll want to check out:
1 – Evangelische Stiftskirche (Evangelical collegiate church)
2 – Engelsbrunnen (Angel Well)
3 – Spitzer Turm (Pointed Tower)
Upside Down House (Toppels Verdente Welt)
Take a short 15-minute drive outside Wertheim am Main, and you’ll find the Upside Down House (Toppels Verdente Welt).
Someone came up with a brilliant idea to take a fully furnished house and flip it upside down. Before entering the house, make sure to suit up and get ready to become the superhero you always wanted to be.
As soon as you walk in, you’ll notice all the furniture and appliances are secured safely to the ceiling, or is it the roof? It all really depends on how you look at it.
With tons of photo opportunities, from playing the drums to holding up a car, it’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss.
La Flamme Wertheim Hotel & Restaurant
There are plenty of hotel options in Wertheim, and when we travel, one of the hotel requirements is to ensure that it is pet-friendly.
La Flamme Wertheim Hotel & Restaurant is a dog-friendly stay located in the town center and has many amenities, including free WIFI and breakfast. You’ll find the rooms comfortable-sized, with a balcony view of the town (upon request).
The hotel provides an on-site restaurant, or a short walk will take you to one of the local restaurants. We recommend Gasthaus Zum Ochsen or Zum Goldenen Adler for traditional local eats. If you’re looking for a quick snack break, go to Bakery Göpfert across the street (which is also where breakfast is served).
Wertheim Castle
Once a majestic castle perched high on the hill, it now lays in ruins of what used to be. The 12th-century landmark has endured the devastation of an explosion and war throughout history.
To get to the castle, you can walk up the steep hill or take a more relaxed route with a small train. Once you arrive, take the time to explore the castle’s ruins yourself or get a guided tour.
Today the area is used for various events like the Castle Film Festival, Medieval Market, and concerts. After a day of storming the castle, take a break on the terrace and grab a bite to eat. Here you’ll enjoy the relaxed atmosphere while admiring the view.
Wertheim am Main Shopping
You can certainly spend some time perusing local shops downtown, but if you want to do some serious shopping, check out the Wertheim Village.
This 100+ outlet store is modeled after an American outlet mall. You’ll find all your common outlet stores such as Adidas, Puma, Desigual, Kate Spade, Under Armour, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger and so much more.
If you want an American fix for the day, a trip to this outlet mall might be exactly what you’re looking for.
