A beer spa can be more relaxing than you think! While you can take a bath in beer, most of the services don’t involve beer in the treatment. It is, however, a beverage option included in your package.
Our favorite beer spa is at Purkmistr in Pilsen, Czech Republic. It’s a wellness hotel an hour drive west of Prague, and an hour east of Weiden in der Oberpfalz. If you have family visiting or just want to treat yourself and some friends, this is the perfect day trip!
Purkmistr Beer Spa
Like many places in Europe, Purkmistr feels cozy. You’ll find candles lighting your way up the stairs to the spa, and a small, peaceful reception area. Considering how difficult it can be to get a reservation, the spa rarely feels crowded.
Clean and affordable
Even on the busiest of days, you may not see much evidence of other people in the spa. There are no towels or empty glasses laying around. And as you walk around with bare feet, the floor feels clean.
For the price, the whole experience is top notch. Purkmistr Beer Spa bath package costs 900 CZK, or just around $40 USD. This includes a 20 minute bath, with 20 minutes afterwards to rest in the quiet room, and complimentary beer throughout the treatment.
If you choose the beer bath, you will also be able to tap your own beer. The other packages (such as lavender, chocolate, and peat) do not include a beer tap, but instead you will receive a glass of beer that compliments the aromas of your bath.
More than just a beer spa
After your bath, enjoy a leisurely meal (and more beer!) at their restaurant. But you won’t find your typical spa menu here of smoothies and açai bowls.
While you could order a salad, you can also treat yourself to a hearty meal of grilled pork neck or chicken with potatoes or dumplings. And don’t forget to wash it all down with a beer!
If you’re completely exhausted from your day of bathing and eating, you can also book a room at the hotel. Again, however, we recommend you make your reservation in advance.
Pilsen Beer: A Short History
You may be familiar with the Pils style of beer, and you may even know the brand Pilsner Urquell. But before the brand was established, citizens were allowed to brew their own beer at home and sell it. In the early 19th century, citizen brewers formed the Pilsner Burghers’ Brewery to ensure a quality standard, which then led to the formation of Pilsner Urquell.
And while Pilsner Urquell distributes their beer globally, other breweries throughout Pilsen continue to make beer. The beer you’ll have at Purkmistr isn’t pasteurized, which means all the nutrients is still present – that’s why it’s so good for you!
So go ahead and book yourself a beer spa day. You deserve it.
